IFC Invests in Compartamos Banco to Boost Financial Inclusion for Micro and Small Enterprises in Peru

February 9, 2026

Lima, Peru, February 9, 2026. With the aim of expanding access to credit for micro and small enterprises (MSEs), with a special focus on women-owned businesses, and supporting Peru’s efforts to foster inclusive economic growth and financial inclusion, the International Finance Corporation (IFC), a member of the World Bank Group, has approved an investment in Compartamos Banco.

Compartamos Banco, part of the Gentera Group, serves more than 1.4 million clients across 23 regions in Peru, with 85 percent of its portfolio dedicated to MSEs. The bank is a market leader in group lending, reaching 53 percent of its clients through this innovative model. Seventy-five percent of the IFC loan proceeds will be allocated to women-owned MSEs (WMSEs), building on Compartamos Banco’s strong track record—currently, 64 percent of its portfolio by volume and 76 percent by number of clients correspond to women-owned businesses.

“IFC’s support validates the strength of our business model and enables us to continue expanding access to credit for those who have traditionally been excluded from the financial system. Our goal is clear: to reach more entrepreneurs with responsible solutions that generate long-term economic and social impact,” said César Sanguinetti, Chief Financial Officer of Compartamos Banco.

Elizabeth Martínez de Marcano, IFC Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean, said: “IFC is proud to partner with Compartamos Banco to advance financial inclusion in Peru. By expanding access to credit for micro and small enterprises, especially those led by women, we are helping to unlock the country’s economic potential, create jobs, and foster more inclusive growth. This project exemplifies our commitment to supporting innovative financial institutions that drive positive change in emerging markets.”

MSEs are the backbone of the Peru’s economy, accounting for more than 99 percent of all firms and around 85 percent of total employment, according to the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI). However, over 70 percent operate informally, limiting access to formal finance and growth opportunities. With IFC’s support, Compartamos Banco will continue expanding its reach, leveraging its extensive branch network and digital capabilities to serve more entrepreneurs across Peru.

Note to editors

The IFC investment consists of a US$15 million loan, equivalent in Peruvian soles. The investment was made in collaboration with Citi, which contributed an additional 50 million Peruvian soles in financing to Compartamos Banco. In line with Citi Social Finance’s efforts in Latin America and the Caribbean, Citi supports initiatives that promote financial inclusion and expand access to essential services and basic infrastructure for low-income populations, aligning this investment with sustainable finance principles and a strong focus on social impact across the region.
