This study investigates household and business energy consumption patterns, access to energy solutions, financing mechanisms, and consumer preferences among refugees and host communities across Uganda’s major refugee-hosting districts. The aim is to understand the current energy landscape and identify viable entry points for private sector engagement.
Among the key findings, the study highlights a significant unmet demand for modern energy solutions, with over $50 million spent annually on traditional fuels and lighting sources. It identifies strong potential for expanding solar energy markets, promoting alternative cooking fuels, and leveraging mobile money and informal savings groups to improve access to clean energy technologies.
Note: While the findings are based on data collected in 2020, they continue to offer valuable insights into the energy landscape and highlight opportunities for private sector engagement.
