IFC and the Lao PDR Department of Water Resources developed a 6-step process to characterize the Nam Ou River Basin using innovative methodology to better understand the river and its people. In January 2016 the profiling team, including 25 field surveyors, collected data on water-related livelihoods from 1,500 households in 75 riverine villages within a five kilometer corridor of the Nam Ou River Basins in Phongsaly, Oudomxay and Luang Prabang provinces. Divided into five zones, the basins’ field locations were chosen based on geological and ecological characteristics.
