Bissau, July 1, 2024 – Starting today, Rosa Brito becomes the World Bank Group Resident Representative for Guinea-Bissau, a position that will unify country-level leadership across the institution to better support the country’s public and private sector priorities. This newly created position provides a single point of contact for access to the full breadth of World Bank Group products and services and will enhance the institutions’ ability to address global challenges, and drive development with speed, efficiency, and impact.
"Guinea-Bissau is a country with great untapped potential, but there are still many challenges. This new position gives us a unique opportunity to redouble our efforts to ensure that our projects have a real and positive impact in the lives of the Bissau-Guinean population," says Rosa Brito. "With this joint representation of the World Bank Group, we will also establish new partnerships with the private sector that are very important to leverage the country's development."
In Guinea-Bissau, the World Bank Group’s portfolio totals $485 million, with 9 national projects and 5 regional projects, focused in key sectors such as energy, transports, governance, health, education, environment, digital transformation, and food security.
Prior to this role, Rosa Brito was Acting Resident Representative of the World Bank in Cabo Verde, and Country Economist for Cabo Verde and Guinea-Bissau. A Cabo Verdean national, Rosa Brito has a career spanning more than 20 years of experience, including at the Central Bank of Cabo Verde, as an Advisor to the Government in State Reform, and as a member of the Board of Directors of the Economic Regulation Agency.
The introduction of joint country representation is an important step towards building a stronger World Bank Group. Guinea-Bissau is one of 21 World Bank Group offices transitioning to a single World Bank Group Country Manager or Resident Representative for the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD), International Development Association (IDA), the International Finance Corporation (IFC), and the Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (MIGA).
