Jakarta, January 11, 2022 — Indonesia's aspiring architects will benefit from a green building design course, helping them drive low-carbon economic growth and creating skilled jobs amidst rapid urbanization in the world's fourth most populous country.
Under an agreement announced today, the International Finance Corporation (IFC), a member of the World Bank Group, is expanding its partnership with six new universities to deliver the Design for Greater Efficiency (DfGE) course to guide students and young professionals in building and promoting resource-efficient designs. These include Universitas Trisakti, Universitas Sebelas Maret, Universitas Brawijaya, Universitas Pembangunan Jaya, Universitas Atma Jaya Yogyakarta and Universitas Widya Kartika.
"We are very pleased to have the support and commitment of these universities to train a new generation of green building specialists," said Azam Khan, IFC Country Manager for Indonesia and Timor-Leste. "By working together, we can develop the skills, knowledge, and sustainability standards among our young professionals to steer Indonesia's construction sector onto a low-carbon path for the benefit of the people and environment."
Green buildings can serve as a sustainable solution to meet the country's growing infrastructure needs and increase its resiliency to climate change, particularly as the economy recovers from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the lack of skilled professionals remains one of the biggest hurdles to scaling up green buildings in developing countries. In response, as part of the Green Building Market Transformation Program, IFC developed the DfGE course aimed at university students to promote green building growth and design.
"As an educational institution, Universitas Trisakti needs to raise awareness and increase the uptake of green building practices among students," said Dr. Ir. A Hadi Prabowo, MT, Dean of Planning and Civil Engineering Department, Universitas Trisakti. "IFC's Design for Greater Efficiencies is a timely course for our students to practice green design which will hopefully enhance their role as future leaders in sustainable urbanization."
IFC's work to promote the DfGE course in Indonesia is in partnership with Switzerland's State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO). From green building standards, management, to design-evaluation tools, the program covers a wide range of topics and has been delivered to six universities. DfGE has covered eight cities in Indonesia: Jakarta, Tangerang, Bandung, Surakarta, Semarang, Yogyakarta, Malang and Surabaya with the aim to have more than 1,000 students join the program by 2024, and will be targeting more cities in the future.
"IFC's strategic collaboration will further increase our understanding of green building best practices and strengthen our connection with the green building community," said Dr. techn. Ir. Sholihin As'ad, MT, Dean of Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Sebelas Maret. "The combination of our knowledge of local context and perspective with the green building community provides a more comprehensive understanding and accelerates the implementation of green building practices through education, research, and community service."
Since 2011, IFC's green building program has laid a foundation for green building regulations in Jakarta, Bandung, and Semarang, and has catalyzed the market through green building finance, boosting green building education and awareness, and promoting IFC's voluntary green building certification system, Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiencies (EDGE). To date, EDGE has certified 1.4 million square meters of building area in Indonesia with a potential of 41,639.46-tons CO₂ reduction, which is equivalent to planting 688,510 tree seedlings.
