LINDAL's plant, in Jundiaí (SP), meets eco-efficiency parameters and reduces impact on the environment
São Paulo, Brazil, November 11th, 2021— LINDAL do Brasil, in Jundiaí, just received the first EDGE certification granted to an industrial plant in Brazil. The sustainable solutions applied in construction of the building resulted in a reduction in the use of energy, water, and embodied energy in building materials. LINDAL Group is a world leader in the development and manufacture of aerosol valves and actuators and is present in 14 countries.
EDGE certification is an IFC innovation based on free software that provides technical solutions to adapt construction projects to green building standards, while generating positive environmental and financial results. To obtain EDGE certification, companies must prove that the design of their construction project will reduce the consumption of energy, water, and embodied energy in building materials by at least 20 percent compared to a conventional building. LINDAL's newly certified industrial plant achieved a 30 percent reduction in energy use, 33 percent reduction in water use, and 60 percent reduction in the use of embodied energy.
LINDAL's industrial plant was inaugurated in September this year, after a €14 million investment. The project, completed in 10 months, has 12,866 m². The idea of using EDGE certification arose during the development of the project, in discussions between the developer and LINDAL's project manager. Marco Manho, from Five Engenharia, responsible for the management of the construction work, noted, "During the project study phase, LINDAL's team was interested in learning more about sustainable construction options. Our specialist showed that the project was already meeting most of EDGE certification parameters and that only specific adjustments would be needed. Nowadays, we see that companies are more focused on minimizing the impact on the environment.". Adaptations that were added to meet the EDGE certification included installation of a solar heating system, water-saving taps, insulated roofs and walls, occupancy sensors in bathrooms and rainwater collection for reuse.
Brazil represents South America's largest green-certified building market, with over 1,400 green buildings and projects – both residential and commercial. The construction industry is currently one of the sectors that generates most waste and accounts for almost 40 percent of CO2 emissions into the atmosphere. Thus, the promotion of green buildings through sustainable certifications is essential to reduce emissions, thereby lessening our damage to the environment. IFC projects a $40 billion investment opportunity in green construction through 2025, with a potential for 450,000 green residential units (dependent upon changing economic conditions).

Encouraging green buildings is essential to opening up a sustainable economic recovery", says Carlos Leiria Pinto, IFC's Country Manager in Brazil.
Moacir Camargo, Managing Director of Lindal do Brasil, added "The EDGE certification for LINDAL do Brasil's new plant is the first accreditation for an industrial building in Brazil to receive it. No waste generated at the plant is sent to landfill and a series of energy and water saving measures have been incorporated, such as rainwater harvesting system, and skylights providing daylight needs up to 50% from the top floor. Going forwards LINDAL do Brasil is also making plans for a solar paneled roof."
EDGE certification is carried out in two stages: first, the preliminary design is analyzed, and, later, the implementation is validated, after the construction work is completed. EDGE is now present in over 170 countries. Initially, it was developed to be applied in emerging markets, but in 2021 it was expanded to be used in any country in the world. Investments in green buildings play a pivotal role in spurring low-carbon economic growth and securing a transition to clean energy.
In June 2021, IFC announced its first partnership in Brazil to stimulate the green building market, with Itaú BBA. The initiative involves technical training for the bank's property developer clients and advisory services to identify opportunities in the green building market with the EDGE certification.
