Afya, with support from the International Finance Corporation (IFC), is redefining healthcare in Brazil by combining top-tier medical education, lifelong learning, and digital innovation. Serving one-third of Brazil’s physicians, Afya operates 32 campuses—many in underserved regions—ensuring that 70% of graduates stay to practice where they are most needed.
Its integrated model spans undergraduate and postgraduate medical training, continuing education, and a digital platform used by 350,000 doctors. The platform delivers telemedicine, AI-powered clinical decision support, and real-time disease surveillance—already credited with predicting dengue outbreaks.
Since 2016, Afya has grown fourfold through strategic acquisitions, quality improvements, and pioneering public health initiatives. A $90 million IFC sustainability-linked loan is fueling its next expansion, aiming for 5 million free consultations by 2030. The model’s impact is tangible: improved local health indicators, reduced mortality from preventable diseases, and billions in estimated social benefits.
By addressing regional healthcare disparities, advancing digital health, and training the next generation of physicians, Afya offers a blueprint for building resilient, equitable, and technology-driven health systems worldwide.
