Sometimes companies can effectively pioneer change and challenge notions of workplace stereotypes. Programa Mujer, in Chile, is an innovative example of how to break with traditions that excludes women from mining operations. Chile was experiencing high unemployment among women. The company marked the first attempts, throughout the mining industry, to integrate women into the operations of heavy mining equipment. The company set up a fair, but rigorous recruitment process and provided extensive training. The women who were eventually hired on a permanent basis are today, part of the mine operations team and have gained acceptance among their workmates.
