Women LEAD Africa Alliance

Transforming Women’s Economic Opportunities in Africa

About the Alliance

The Women Leadership, Economic Advancement, and Development (LEAD) Alliance, convened by IFC, is a select group of influential private sector leaders and thought leaders recognized across Africa. Together, they collaborate with IFC to drive meaningful progress for women’s economic advancement, creating a lasting impact across the continent.

Why Focus on Women’s Entrepreneurship in Africa?

Africa presents a powerful opportunity for investment in women’s entrepreneurship. The continent leads the world in female entrepreneurship, with 26% of adult women in sub-Saharan Africa engaged in business ventures.

With over 530 million young people (aged 15-35) projected by 2025—half of them women—Africa is home to a dynamic, innovation-driven generation. Young women are leveraging digital platforms to build businesses and shape industries. However, many remain concentrated in the informal sector, facing persistent barriers to growth, particularly in accessing capital. Unlocking their full potential can fuel job creation, enhance productivity, and strengthen economies across Africa.

Our Priorities and Goals

The Africa Women LEAD Alliance is committed to accelerating young African women’s access to entrepreneurship opportunities in high-growth sectors, such as the creative economy, digital technology, and social enterprises.

The Alliance’s objectives and strategy will be co-developed alongside its leaders, fostering collaboration and innovation to ensure women entrepreneurs thrive in the industries of the future.
