IFC, Standard Chartered Bank Nepal Limited, and WorldLink Communications Ltd. partner on $29 million project to expand connectivity, create jobs, and drive economic growth.
Kathmandu, July 07, 2025 — In a strategic move to expanding Nepal’s digital infrastructure and unlock its full economic potential, IFC, in partnership with Standard Chartered Bank Nepal Limited (SCBNL), has committed $29 million to WorldLink Communications Limited and its subsidiary Data World Limited. The investment aims to grow Nepal’s fiber networks and develop innovative data centers across the country to help bridge the digital divide and drive inclusive development.
By expanding access to high-speed internet and building modern infrastructure, including robust fiber optic networks to connect remote areas, the partnership aims to address the rising demand for data storage and processing capabilities.
“At WorldLink, we believe that connectivity is the bridge to opportunity. This strategic partnership with IFC and SCBNL will significantly strengthen that bridge across Nepal,” said Dileep Agrawal, Founder and Chairman, WorldLink Communications Ltd. “This collaboration is a testament to our shared commitment to building a digitally empowered society and a cornerstone for a thriving future for all Nepalis” he added.
Data center infrastructure is expected to become a crucial element of Nepal's economy and growth given the growing reliance on technology across various sectors. By expanding fiber network and developing a series of state-of-the-art data centers throughout the country — which includes Nepal’s first EDGE-certified facility — this partnership is setting new benchmarks for sustainable and innovative growth.
“This investment aligns with the Government of Nepal’s vision under the 16th National Plan and Digital Nepal Framework to achieve universal internet access, integrated infrastructure development and leverage technology for socio-economic progress,” said Imad N. Fakhoury, IFC’s Regional Director for South Asia. “By enhancing digital access especially in underserved areas and creating quality jobs, IFC is proud to support Nepal’s digital transformation, connectivity and economic growth.”
The project will promote sustainable development through environmentally friendly data centers and resilient fiber-to-the-home technology. With IFC’s support, WorldLink Communications also aims to enhance women’s representation in the workforce, aligning with global strategies for inclusive employment.
“Nepal’s digital sector holds immense potential for innovation and growth. Unlocking the full economic benefits of digital technologies requires widespread adoption and greater access, particularly in rural areas where fixed broadband infrastructure remains limited. Data center infrastructure will play a key role in supporting this transformation, driving inclusive growth in national priority sectors and digital services for all,” said Vikram Kumar, IFC’s Director for Infrastructure and Natural Resources in Asia and the Pacific.
“This landmark collaboration between WorldLink, its subsidiary Data World, IFC, and SCBNL is a significant step towards strengthening Nepal’s digital infrastructure,” said Gorakh Rana, CEO & Head of Coverage, Nepal. “By financing digital infrastructures in the country, we aim to significantly improve internet accessibility and expand broadband and data centre capabilities nationwide unlocking global opportunities.
