Nairobi, Kenya, October 24, 2022— IFC's Africa Medical Equipment Facility, which helps healthcare providers in sub-Saharan Africa access medical equipment and supplies, today welcomed laboratory diagnostic equipment provider bioMérieux to its growing roster of world-class partners.
France-headquartered bioMérieux's participation in the IFC-led facility will expand opportunities for hospitals and stand-alone laboratories in Africa to obtain and service in vitro diagnostic equipment used to diagnose infectious diseases.
"bioMérieux Africa's commitment to improve global public health by fighting against infectious diseases took another important step forward today. The agreement signed with IFC will directly benefit numerous laboratories, hospitals and the healthcare ecosystem as a whole," said Sindé Chekete, bioMérieux Senior Vice President, Africa Region.
"IFC is working with bioMérieux to build a stronger, more resilient health system across Africa that includes deploying innovative financing solutions to enable more of Africa's smaller private medical providers to purchase and maintain laboratory equipment," said Henrik Elschner Pedersen, IFC's Africa Director for Manufacturing, Agribusiness and Services.
The Africa Medical Equipment Facility (AMEF) works with partner financial institutions and medical equipment manufacturers to make affordable, long-term funding available to African healthcare providers, which often struggle to secure financing, so they can purchase equipment needed to deliver quality care to patients.
AMEF also helps these smaller health providers access procurement training and equipment servicing thanks to its partnership with bioMérieux and other partners in the facility.
Launched in April 2021, AMEF is currently active in Côte d'Ivoire and Kenya and plans to expand to Cameroon, Rwanda, Senegal, Tanzania, and Uganda. Partner financial institutions include the Co-operative Bank of Kenya and NSIA Banque Côte d'Ivoire.
