Closing the Gap: A Data Outlook on Women’s Economic Opportunities

September 23, 2025

Summary

The Gender Data Gaps Report presents systematic analysis of gender indicators relevant to women’s economic opportunities. Drawing on 20 datasets from public institutions and private-sector providers, the report groups 429 indicators across ten thematic categories, including employment, leadership, capital, supply chains, gender-based violence, education, digital access, flexible work and care, equal pay, and entrepreneurship. This mapping provides an overview of both the strengths and shortcomings of existing gender data.

The report underscores that fragmented methodologies, inconsistent reporting, short or irregular time series, and limited disaggregation prevent reliable cross-country and sector comparisons. By highlighting these persistent gaps, it offers a roadmap for harmonizing gender indicators through collaboration between public institutions like the World Bank, ILO, UNESCO, UN Women, and national statistical systems, alongside private actors such as Bloomberg, Economic Dividends for Gender Equality, Equileap, and World Benchmarking Alliance.

IFC is committed to leading these efforts through its Private Sector Gender & Inclusion Data Hub. By convening diverse partners and integrating public and non-public data sources, the Hub will generate the evidence needed to close gaps and inform private-sector strategies.
