Gender Inclusion at the Heart of a Healthcare Company

September 6, 2024

Summary

In 2008, four women set out to transform healthcare for women and children in Ethiopia. Dr. Zufan Lakew, Dr. Ambaye Woldemichael, Dr. Mulu Muletta, and Dr. Adanech Belay co-founded Hemen Maternal and Children’s Specialty Medical Center, a women-led institution that has grown into one of Addis Ababa's largest specialty healthcare providers. Hemen stands out as a leading example of gender inclusion in a country where only 18% of all physicians are women.

In partnership with IFC, Hemen conducted a comprehensive Corporate Gender and Inclusion Assessment in 2021 which led to the implementation of gender-inclusive policies, ensuring equal pay, fostering career development, and building a respectful workplace. These efforts not only enhance employee satisfaction but also solidify Hemen's market position as a provider of high-quality care for women, by women.
