The World Bank Group’s Policy on the Use of Intermediate Jurisdictions encourages IFC clients to adopt responsible tax practices. To support this, IFC has partnered with The B Team to launch the Enhancing Responsible Tax Practices Program: Focus on Africa – a first-of-its-kind, 12-month initiative designed to guide IFC clients through the adoption and implementation of responsible tax practices. The program uses a peer-to-peer learning model, pairing clients with tax leaders from multinational corporations recognized for their leadership in responsible taxation.

The program was officially launched in April 2025 during a Kick-off Workshop in Nairobi, Kenya. The event brought together IFC clients and Responsible Tax Champions — who have endorsed The B Team’s Responsible Tax Principles — to share knowledge, exchange best practices, and explore common implementation challenges.

The workshop convened ten IFC clients with cross-border operations in Africa — Axian Telecom, Ecobank, ETG, Globeleq Ltd, Helios Towers, IHS, KCB, M-Kopa, Seacom, and Terrapay — alongside six Responsible Tax Champions — Anglo-American, RELX, Repsol, Rio Tinto, Unilever, and Vodafone. This diverse group offered valuable insights into how responsible tax practices can strengthen transparency, mitigate risks, and support sustainable development.

Kenya Revenue Authority Commissioner General Mr. Humphrey Wattanga officially opened the event, delivering a powerful message: “Responsible tax conduct is both good ethics and good economics.”

The workshop marked a significant milestone in building partnerships, promoting the adoption of responsible tax principles, and reinforcing the critical role of taxation in driving sustainable economic growth and development across Africa and beyond.

The successful launch of the program was later highlighted at the Mo Ibrahim Governance Week held in June 2025 with the theme: Financing the Africa We Want.
