Moving Forward: The Aftermath of Copenhagen for Green Investment [PDF]

Moving Forward: The Aftermath of Copenhagen for Green InvestmentAfter Copenhagen, it seems certain that there is still a long way to go before we get a price on carbon emissions that can drive a vibrant and self-sustaining market for clean-energy investment, and before we get binding commitments on greenhouse gas emissions reductions at the national and international levels. In the meantime, it will be important to figure out how to use the limited amount of public finance available to mitigate political, market, and technology risks so as to attract large-scale, private funding for clean energy investment. This article, co-authored by Shilpa Patel, Chief of IFC's Climate Change Unit, for the Journal of Environmental Investing, explores the range of options available to help leverage public money to attract more private investments.

Carbon Efficient Investing in Emerging Markets as a Tool to Combat Global Warming (December 2009) [PDF]

IFC, Standard & Poor's Launch World's First Carbon Efficient Index for Emerging MarketsIFC and Standard & Poor's have launched the world's first carbon efficient index for emerging markets, which aims to mobilize more than $1 billion for carbon-efficient companies over the next three years. The innovative S&P/IFC Carbon Efficient Index will encourage carbon-based competition among emerging-market companies, give carbon-efficient companies access to long-term investors, and should lead to important reductions in carbon emissions in developing countries.

The index was developed by S&P using carbon data provided by Trucost. It will allow investors to closely track the performance of the S&P/IFC Investable Emerging Markets Index, a leading emerging-market benchmark. Investors will gain exposure to emerging markets and benefit from local rates-of-return while reducing the carbon footprint of their portfolios by 24 percent.
