Bhutanese and Kenyan Journalists Discuss the Benefits of Good Corporate Governance


Nairobi, Kenya, and Thimpu, Bhutan, October 2013 - IFC facilitated a half-day awareness-raising session on the benefits of good corporate governance practices and the important role of media in shaping the public image of companies in Kenya. 


By conveying and exposing what constitutes good and bad practice in corporate governance, media coverage can encourage companies to improve their corporate governance practices, thereby increasing the ability of companies to attract investments at lower costs and improving their reputation.


At the event, IFC made a presentation to a group of 14 business journalists and economists under the auspices of the Africa Means Business Project. Funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Africa Means Business is a three-year project of the Thomson Foundation aimed at creating a unique alliance of journalists and economists in Kenya and Ghana, working together to broaden coverage of business activities  that are vital to economic development.


This workshop was part of IFC’s Media Training Program that was launched in 2007 to build up journalists' capacity to report on corporate governance matters. This program has three objectives: to raise public awareness of corporate governance through the media; to improve journalists' investigative skills on corporate governance issues; and, to encourage them to promote corporate governance best practices in emerging markets.


In Bhutan, IFC advised and supported Druk Holding and Investments (DHI) in the delivery of a three-day corporate governance media training workshop for local journalists.


This activity was part of a World Bank/IDF-funded project aimed at strengthening the institutional capacity of DHI to improve the corporate governance of state-owned enterprises in the country. This workshop was the first of its kind in Bhutan to reach out to the media on the benefits of good corporate governance practices.


Twelve business journalists from various media houses and nine public relations/media officers from DHI portfolio companies attended.


To follow up, the Bhutanese journalists have now been invited to cover a high level Corporate Governance training organized by DHI in late November for parliamentarians, government agencies, private sector, multilateral agencies, as well as directors of DHI portfolio companies.


Both capacity building events were based on IFC’s media guide on reporting on corporate governance: Who’s Running the Company: A Guide to Reporting on Corporate Governance which aims to help journalists develop clear and compelling stories that examine how a company is governed. It was produced by IFC’s Global Corporate Governance Forum in partnership with the International Center for Journalists, an organization that advances quality journalism worldwide.


The media guide is now available in six languages (including English). Translations into Arabic, Bulgarian, Farsi, Spanish and Vietnamese are underway.
