CHUEE Developing “Green Buildings” Project in China
Around one third of total carbon dioxide emissions by 2030 will come from buildings, with the largest share coming from developing countries such as China, says the United Nations-backed Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Together with its partner banks, IFC’s CHUEE program is developing a “green buildings” initiative that will help Chinese companies meet this challenge.
The program will provide technical assistance to the government, the private sector, and local financial institutions to significantly reduce greenhouse-gas emissions in the construction industry.
By increasing energy and water efficiency, for example, buildings can reduce their negative impact on the environment. As such, the CHUEE “green buildings” program will contribute to the development of an energy efficiency code and train partners, such as government, local financial institutions and the private sector to support its implementation. In addition, it will create incentives for businesses to invest in green buildings, and raise public awareness in China.
