Selecting workers for retrenchment during workforce realignments can be a difficult task. Some selection criterion such as length of service or qualifications cans still unfairly target particular groups, especially women in the workforce. When the Kenya Railways Corporation developed procedures for retrenching a group of temporary workers, it was not anticipated that the procedures would unduly impact female worker. This case study outlines a multi-criterion approach to retrenchment that mitigates impact on any one group of workers.
