The development of SME Finance in the agricultural sector was also identified as an important issue to bring forward food security and to reach the Millennium Development Goals. We conducted analytical work with the objective of identifying appropriate approaches to calculate or reduce the main risks and costs that inhibit access to financial services in the agricultural sector in developing countries.

Le rapport présente un aperçu du marché des lampes solaires portables en Afrique, et analyse les tendances sur ce marché. Des millions de personnes en Afrique s’éclairent encore à l’aide de combustibles chers, souvent inefficaces et parfois dangereux telles que des lampes au kerosène. Le rapport indique que le marché potentiel pour les lampes solaires portables en Afrique est énorme et mûr pour les investisseurs. Le rapport estime à 40 – 50 % le taux de croissance des ventes (en volume) d’ici 2015 pour les lampes solaires portables. Actuellement, la pénétration de ces lampes sur le marché ne s’élève qu’à 0.5 % de la population sous électrifiée et non électrifiée du continent.

To help increase access to finance for individuals and small businesses in South Africa, IFC and Swiss Economic Cooperation and Development Division at the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) are working with WIZZIT to develop a lending program that will allow borrowers to access funds through their mobile phone. This case study describes the pilot program, outline key lessons learned and portrays some of the beneficiaries.
