The garment sector is Bangladesh’s top employer—reducing poverty for millions of workers, mostly women. IFC works on many fronts to improve the sector’s environmental and social standards and build its global competitiveness:
- Providing $40 million for local banks to lend to factories upgrading their structural, electrical, and fire safety standards.
- Collaborating with ILO in the Better Work program—offering advice on how 1,500 factories can improve working conditions and comply with national labor laws and international standards.
- Implementing the Bangladesh Partnership for Cleaner Textile (PaCT), which helps more than 100 factories meet their cleaner production goals—increasing resource efficiency.

Today the industry is committed to becoming globally competitive and safe for employees. IFC provides long-term financing to local banks and forms partnerships with leading international buyers to make the garment industry safer for its workers. |
