IFC finances electricity generation, transmission, and distribution upgrades in developing countries, with a particular focus on natural gas and renewable energy such as solar, wind, and hydropower. We also help remove barriers to private sector investment in the power sector by identifying and developing new market opportunities and supporting new technology and business models with potential to scale.

Many of the projects we have financed were first-of-their-kind initiatives making the case that renewable energy is a commercially viable option for developing countries such as India and Zambia; we have also helped countries such as Egypt and Jordan develop solar and wind power projects at scale. Through IFC InfraVentures, IFC has also helped countries such as Cameroon develop large power generation projects with private sector support.
