The Impact of Domestic and Sexual Violence on the Workplace in Solomon Islands

March 25, 2019

The report, The Impact of Domestic and Sexual Violence on the Workplace in Solomon Islands, was produced by IFC under the overall guidance of IFC’s Gender Secretariat. It was undertaken in collaboration with the Solomon Islands Chamber of Commerce and Industry, SICCI, the peak representative body for the private sector in Solomon Islands.

IFC and SICCI have partnered in the initiative, the Waka Mere Commitment to Action. Fifteen of Solomon Islands’ largest companies have signed up to the Waka Mere, or “She Works” in Pijin, which aims to advance gender equality in the country’s private sector by promoting women in leadership; building respectful and supportive workplaces; and increasing opportunities for women in jobs traditionally held by men. The initiative is supported by the Governments of Australia and New Zealand under the Pacific Partnership.

More than 1,200 people, a third of all employees, from nine Waka Mere companies, participated in the survey on “How problems at home affect employees at work.”  The survey findings will inform ongoing development of appropriate workplace responses and provide an early benchmark to measure changes in the ways in which staff are supported.
