G20 Inclusive Business Framework and Leaders’ Call to Action

Leaders at the G20 Leaders Summit in Turkey issued a call to action to public and private sector representatives, international organizations and civil society to advance the ability of businesses around the world to integrate low-income people into their value chains. The call highlights inclusive business’ important role in the implementation of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals aimed at ending poverty by 2030. As part of the Call to action, the G20 endorsed the G20 Inclusive Business Framework, which presents policy options for G20 and non-G20 governments, companies, and international financial institutions to promote and support inclusive business.

The Role of the Private Sector in Expanding Health Access to the Base of the Pyramid

IFC’s purpose is to create opportunities for people to escape poverty and improve their lives by developing more outlets for inclusive and sustainable growth. To ensure equitable access to healthcare, we are committed to supporting companies that are providing health services to the poor in commercially viable ways. To this end, IFC conducted a study on how to help the private sector expand access to health services to the base of the pyramid. The study examined Brazil, China, India, Indonesia, Mexico, Nigeria and Turkey—countries with significant health markets yet large underserved populations. Three health segments were analyzed: healthcare service provision, distribution of drugs and medical equipment, and medical technology.

L’éclairage solaire pour la base de la pyramide – panorama d’un marché émergent

Le rapport présente un aperçu du marché des lampes solaires portables en Afrique, et analyse les tendances sur ce marché.  Des millions de personnes en Afrique s’éclairent encore à l’aide de combustibles chers, souvent inefficaces et parfois dangereux telles que des lampes au kerosène. Le rapport indique que le marché potentiel pour les lampes solaires portables en Afrique est énorme et mûr pour les investisseurs. Le rapport estime à 40 – 50 % le taux de croissance des ventes (en volume) d’ici 2015 pour les lampes solaires portables. Actuellement, la pénétration de ces lampes sur le marché ne s’élève qu’à 0.5 % de la population sous électrifiée et non électrifiée du continent.

Stories from the Field – WIZZIT Micro-lending Pilot (South Africa)

To help increase access to finance for individuals and small businesses in South Africa, IFC and Swiss Economic Cooperation and Development Division at the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) are working with WIZZIT to develop a lending program that will allow borrowers to access funds through their mobile phone. Credit Reporting at the Base of the Pyramid

The report takes a fresh look at the state of credit reporting at the base of the pyramid, describing three main approaches: credit bureaus, credit registries and MFI-specific systems for exchanging client information. The data and analysis for this paper are drawn from IFC and CGAP market intelligence on credit reporting systems.
