Worldwide, 1.3 billion people lack access to electricity limiting health services, education and market access. If developed sustainably, hydropower could be an important part of the renewable mix to help meet growing energy demands, especially in Asia where 700 million people are living without electricity.

At IFC, we’re working to raise environmental and social standards in hydropower development. Our approach is comprehensive: we’re advising companies on how to improve their systems and business operations; we are working with officials to strengthen the sector through improved policy and regulation; and we’re building clients’ knowledge on how to lower environmental and social risks.

Developing hydropower sustainably is a challenge. Subscribe to our monthly newsletter to learn more about how we’re helping our clients realize their goals.
