Meet IFC’s Global Interns

September 1, 2022

This summer, more than 60 interns were selected from over 3,500 applicants through the Global Internship Program (GIP) for an exciting journey at IFC. They represent 33 different nationalities and 35 different schools.

Let’s meet some of the interns from the 2022 cohort!

Eshan Ghasi

Why intern at IFC?

My parents are first-generation refugees, and as a member of a migrant family I grew up in a low-income neighborhood. This made me realize the power of financial independence to address challenges faced by the people at the bottom of the pyramid. No development finance institution is better placed than IFC to tackle this issue, guided by our shared values: impact, integrity, respect, teamwork and innovation.

How has your internship experience been so far?

I am supporting the India Country Team on country strategy and state and local governments financing. I am enjoying my time exploring diverse themes like Agricultural technology, electric vehicle, finance technology, health, Micro-, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises, renewable energy – many of which I didn’t get opportunity to deep dive into in the past. I am grateful to have supportive supervisors who make me feel valued.

Why intern at IFC?

My internship at IFC has been a dream come true and the culmination of my efforts. It provides a unique opportunity to be at the forefront of global efforts for economic development and the privilege to be mentored and inspired by some of the top leaders in the field.

What are your key takeaways, and what would you say to the next Global Internship rogram (GIP) cohort?

Working at such a global pioneering organization provided me with unique learning opportunities and exposure, as well as the chance to be a part of an institution that can leverage its expertise and resources to develop new markets. As this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, I would advise the next cohort to immerse themselves in the experience and make the most of it.

Why intern at IFC?

I was really attracted by IFC’s mission, culture, and team. IFC has a strong reputation in the market as a top-class investor that delivers significant impact and value-add with rigor and integrity. For my summer internship, I wanted to experience this up close and gain insights into some of the cutting-edge work that IFC is leading in development finance.

How do you see yourself applying your GIP experience to your future career?

IFC takes a systems approach to how it engages with clients and partners. It evaluates and improves the corporate governance of a company —  including the governance attributes of key environmental and social policies and procedures — to identify, reduce, and manage risk. I think this is crucial to delivering sustainable growth and impact. This is something that I will apply and champion.

Ashlee Long

How did you learn about this program?

I am a student at North Carolina Central University where I also serve as the president of the Graduate Student Association (GSA). The GSA partnered with IFC on a company presentation during which I learned about the internship program.

How has your internship experience been so far, and what are some exciting projects you have worked on?

My experience has been amazing! The things that stand out to be the most are the culture and the diversity. Being able to interact with people from all over the world is indescribable. I am excited to be working on the company’s African American recruitment initiative!

Leika Karasawa

How has your internship experience been so far?

My experience at IFC has been amazing! I am part of the Latin America and Caribbean Trade team in Washington D.C. I had the opportunity to learn about different financial products, such as trade finance, supply chain, and commodity financing, and how financial institutions are a key player in developing countries’ growth.

What are your key takeaways, and what would you say to the next GIP cohort?

My suggestion to the next cohort is to grab all the opportunities that come to you, network, and come prepared. Plan your priorities for the internship and study what you can ahead of time. Once you are here, you will see the opportunities are endless.

Why intern at IFC?

Growing up, it had always been my goal to work for international organizations. Coming to the US, I came to know more about IFC and its mission to transform lives. IFC has a diversity of culture and skillsets making it the best place to develop interpersonal skills and build a global professional network.

What are your key takeaways, and what would you say to the next GIP cohort?

Keep in mind that this is a very competitive program and therefore you should apply as soon as possible. Remember to follow IFC on social media platforms to stay updated (I have found IFC staff and the leadership team very active on LinkedIn)! It is without a doubt the best place to work.

How did you learn about this program, and how did you find the application process?

It had always been a dream to work with the World Bank Group since childhood and I subscribed to IFC’s YouTube channel and attended most of the HR information sessions. My application process was seamless. After passing the interviews, I was offered an opportunity to come to Washington D.C.!

Why intern at IFC?

  • The impact: knowing that the project I am working on has the potential to transform lives, help end poverty, and boost shared prosperity is something I would do any day.
  • The diversity: diversity always brings fresh ideas and new perspectives to the table to lead and innovate!
  • Learn best practice: IFC offers some of the best practices one can find anywhere in the world, and I get to learn from the best. IFC has offered me an empowering experience that also boosts my confidence and belief in my potential.
