Bhutan has been committed to improving living standards of its population over the past 30 years. While there is private sector presence and interest in investing in Bhutan, the growth of a vibrant private sector could get a boost with investments to develop infrastructure, enhanced access to finance for small businesses and development of skills among the labor force.
IFC’s vision of sustainable and inclusive growth is a natural fit with Bhutan’s Gross National Happiness philosophy. IFC and Bhutan are working to build a strong foundation of shared values.
IFC has partnered with Bhutan National Bank. In addition to previous trade facilities to the bank, IFC made one of the first equity investments in Bhutan in FY13. IFC continues to engage in discussions with various stakeholders and private sector representatives to identify areas of cooperation in the key sectors of hydropower, tourism, manufacturing and agriculture.
