Renewable Energy:IFC investments in renewables focus primarily on solar and wind technologies. IFC has been involved in financing solar photovoltaic (PV) technology since 1989. In recent years the global PV market has experienced rapid growth due to improving technologies, and to the addition of governmental policy responses to encourage innovation in this field.
Infrastructure Machinery: IFC has prioritized investments in energy efficient machinery: to help reduce poverty by expanding access to alternative and affordable sources of electricity, to encourage infrastructure expansion and to mitigate the impacts of climate change—of particular importance for industries such as transport and construction with a significant track record of carbon emissions.
Transport: Since the 1960s, IFC has invested over 2 billion in 90 transportation equipment companies in 30 countries. Investments in the automotive and other transportation equipment sectors create opportunities and help reduce poverty by enhancing the flow of goods and the mobility of people, improving business opportunities, and raising standards of living and quality of life in emerging markets. IFC’s investments are creating jobs, building markets, advancing technology, and transferring managerial know-how. We play a critical global leadership role by ensuring that all of our projects set a strong example of environmental and social stewardship.
