IFC Sustainability

Gender Secretariat

What we do

IFC's Gender Secretariat aims to strengthen private sector development by focusing on gender equality for people working as business leaders, entrepreneurs, employees, consumers, and economic stakeholders.

This approach is good for our clients and good for business overall. It is also fundamental if economic development activities are to yield sustainable, widespread benefits in emerging markets.

In this regard, IFC works with corporations, financial institutions, government departments, and regulators, as well as other industry players. We also collaborate with business associations, commercial mediation bodies, research groups, and other partners in development.

How we do it

The Gender Secretariat collaborates with other IFC and World Bank Group units to offer investment and advisory services that:

  • Maximize the productivity and positive impact of IFC investment projects through better working conditions, targeted market segmentation, and through the inclusion of both women and men in supply chains and community relationships.
  • Enable dynamic, women-owned businesses to reach full potential by increasing their access to financial services and markets, particularly in the MSME segment.
  • Reduce formal and informal gender barriers to investing and operating an enterprise in different markets.

IFC and the World Bank Group also produce research, practical handbooks, and other resources for development practitioners interested in this area.
