Market Transformation Strategy focused on Brazil, Enabling Environment
The Market Transformation Strategy (MTS) for soy was meant to serve as a guide for the BACP to support projects that would transform the market along the entire value chain – from production to commercialization – in ways that improve conditions to biodiversity.
The primary geographic focus of the MTS was on Brazil due to: a) its status as the world’s second largest producer at project inception; b) the high level of biodiversity of global significance at risk due to soy expansion; c) high potential for reducing impacts on Brazil’s biodiversity and d) the existing cooperation with country stakeholders, including strong public and private sector engagement in the RTRS and endorsement of the BACP from the GEF’s Brazil Focal Point.
Creating Tools for Better HCV Management in Soy Production Areas
The first goal of the MTS was to support activities for an enabling environment by strengthening mechanisms for protection of biodiversity, limiting the expansion of soy production into HCV areas, and assessing how land use decisions in soy production landscapes influence biodiversity. Grantees developed tools and protocols to monitor HCVs and help producers move toward certification, created maps, and studied the impacts of land use on biodiversity.
Scaling Up Better Management Practices on Smallholder Soy Farms
Second, the MTS aimed to develop, test and scale up the adoption of better management practices that have direct and indirect positive impacts for biodiversity. Grantees developed materials and used them to advise smallholders about safe pesticide use, no-till techniques, and other ways to farm in a more environmentally friendly matter.
The final aim of the MTS was to support increased demand for products with more biodiversity impacts. Grantees researched, demonstrated, and documented data sources and standards for measuring biodiversity.
