IFC has worked on a wide range of processed foods projects, particularly in Latin America, Asia, and Eastern Europe. Projects included processing of fruit juices, production of ready-to-drink cups, bottled water, dairy products, essential oils, meat products, and convenience foods like noodles and snack foods.
IFC's strategic focus in the processed foods and beverages sector is on projects that can take advantage of locally sourced raw materials and provide an appropriate level of value-addition to the market requirements of a specific country or target export market. The transfer of state-of-the art food processing technology and improved sanitation standards are also considered important.
As of June 30, 2010, IFC's portfolio in this sector was $754 million or 28% of IFC's total agribusiness portfolio.
