American Chamber Agricultural Committee Meeting
The Open Agricultural Committee Meeting of the American Chamber of Commerce on January 21st was dedicated to the presentation of the International Finance Corporation project "Agri-Insurance Law in Verkhovna Rada, Its Need, and Expected Benefits" and to the discussion of the recent agri-insurance legislation, namely the Draft Law #5063 “On Peculiarities of Insurance of Agricultural Production with the State Financial Support” developed by the people’s deputy Mykola Prysyazhnyuk and adopted in the first reading on October 21st, 2009.

Members of the Agricultural Committee discussed the current state of the agri-insurance system in Ukraine and supported the model suggested by the Working Group at the Ministry of Agrarian Policy which was developed with participation of the IFC Ukraine Agri-Insurance Project, Ministry of Agrarian Policy, and associations of insurers and producers. It is planned to send open letters to support the legislative changes which enable the development of the agri-insurance system in Ukraine.

Insurers Discuss Test Marketing Results

On December 24, the project held a working session with 12 insurance companies to discuss the findings of the test marketing of the new insurance product - Multi-Peril Winter Wheat Insurance for the Whole Production Cycle. The test marketing was launched in October and lasted for three months.

A total of 10 contracts were concluded in Kmenlnytsky, Poltava, and Vinnytsia oblasts. The areas insured ranged from 700 to 1250 ha totaling 9875 ha. The premiums amounted to UAH 2.7 million and the sum insured totals UAH 22 million.

On Dec 7, the heads of insurance companies providing agricultural insurance attended an IMF Project seminar in the World Bank office in Kyiv.
