IFC regularly receives proposals for private sector projects in the Cleaner Technologies sector with substantial environmental benefits. Some of these projects are ready for consideration as mainstream IFC investments. But many others need further preparation to be considered for IFC financing or cannot meet IFC's investment criteria because they involve higher-than-acceptable costs and/or risks.

The Cleaner Technologies Program has been established to support business initiatives that have a strong potential to increase environmental sustainability but must overcome the uncertainty associated with new markets, new technologies and new ways of doing business in the following sectors:

• Cleaner Production, or eco-efficiency - pollution prevention at source rather than end-of-pipe clean-up
• Environmental Management Systems
• Clean water - affordable access to potable water and waste water treatment
• Sustainable energy – energy efficiency, renewable energy, cleaner energy
• Air quality management
• Waste minimization (i.e. avoidance, re-use, recycling) including solid waste and hazardous waste management
