Komodo Collaborative Management Initiative (Komodo Project)

IMAGE: A komodo dragonThe IFC-financed Komodo project (US$16.5) in Indonesia represents an innovative model whereby the Ministry of Forestry has approved a tourism concession to a joint venture company. The company is jointly owned by an international non-governmental organization (NGO), The Nature Conservancy, and a local tourism company Jaytasha Putrindo Utama (JPU). The new company, Putri Naga Komodo, has been authorized to set and collect user fees, establish and monitor carrying capacity limits and in conjunction with the park authorities ensure the overall ecological integrity of the Komodo park.

The aim is to enhance the limited capacity of the Park Authority to protect the threatened resources and to try and make Komodo park financially self-sustaining. The project is basing its conservation strategy on an adaptive management approach that enable project activities and planning to respond to the changing threats to this unique terrestrial and marine biodiversity. The project is building up incentives such community grant fund and other methods of supporting family-based businesses alongside enforcement of park regulations. The idea is to encourage the community to switch from the current destructive fishing practices to sustainable livelihood based on a rational utilization of available resources.

This is a seven year project which began in July 2005.
