Gender reporting multi-stakeholder workshop: Johannesburg, South Africa
December 10, 2008

Visit the GRI website for the full article describing this workshop.

The Johannesburg workshop, held December 10, 2008, included 21 participants from the private sector (financial institutions, mining sector, consulting companies, telcom industry), NGOs (women organizations, civil society, media), academic institutions, as well as international and bilateral organizations. Objectives of the session were to:

  • gather views of the participants on what gender issues that should be addressed and why
  • gain insight from participants on how to report on the issues identified

Similar to the London workshops, feedback gathered during the Johannesburg sessions are to be incorporated in a Gender and Reporting Resource Document, which will help guide organizations with gender and sustainability reporting.

To kick off the discussion, participants were presented with a variety of terms by which to categorize gender issues:

(Wo)men in the Workplace

(Wo)men in the Community

(Wo)men in the Supply Chain

(Wo)men as Investors

(Wo)men as Consumers/Clients

Other

Participants agreed that their priority categories are:

  • (Wo)men in the Workplace
  • (Wo)men in the Community
  • (Wo)men in the Supply Chain

In addition to presentations by the GRI and IFC facilitators, Lonmin—the world's third largest primary platinum producer which operates in South Africa—presented their Women in Mining work.
