Location of project and Description of site
About 60 miles from the City of Karachi, on an open site, with no villages or towns in the immediate vicinity.
Description of Company and Purpose of Project
The project involves the construction and operation of the first acrylic fiber plant in Pakistan, with a capacity of 30,000 tons per annum.
Environmental Category and Issues
This is an environmental review Category B project; principal issues involve air emissions, liquid effluents, spill prevention, solid and liquid wastes, fire prevention and emergency response, and employee protection from noise, dust and hazardous substances. The sponsor has presented plans to address these issues and demonstrate the proposed project will comply with applicable governmental and World Bank requirements; key actions include the installation of solvent recovery and wastewater treatment facilities, and provisions for employee training, including fire and spill prevention, emergency response, and use of personal protective equipment.
