Description of Company and Purpose of Project
Calex is a 100% state-owned company. In 1993, an additional company was formed as a joint venture with Samsung of South Korea to manufacture refrigerators and freezers. Calex has also invested in a state-of-the-art compressor manufacturing facility built by Samsung. Calex is one of two companies manufacturing refrigerators and freezers in Slovakia. The purpose of the project is to assist the company in complying with the requirements of the Montreal Protocol.
Environmental Category and Issues
The project will eliminate CFC use by Calex in the manufacture of insulation for refrigerators and freezers and will result in avoiding the use of more than 130 tons of CFCs per year. CFC use will be replaced with cyclopentane as the blowing agent. This will involve appropriate storage and piping of pentane, installation of safety measures, and worker training. Calex has already taken measures to convert the refrigerant circuit to using HFC-134a. The project has been classified as Category B.
