Public sector support

Over the past several years, countries in Southeast Europe have experienced considerable progress in establishing an up to date regulatory framework. The foundations for corporate governance and capital market development have been laid.

These reforms have enabled the creation of a number of new institutions (securities commissions, registrars, stock exchanges etc.), and attempted to strengthen the roles of existing institutions in an effort to establish sound corporate governance practices and functioning capital markets.

However, despite the fact that a basic set of rules is in place, the record of their observance in Southeast European countries has so far been unimpressive.

That is why, the project will assist:

- policymakers to draft new and amend the existing legislation

- judges and magistrates to deal with law enforcement

- stock exchanges and securities commissions to develop national corporate governance codes and the appropriate listing requirements

- other public and nongovernmental sector partners across the region to establish new corporate governance institutions.
