Denpasar, January 28 – The Association of Exporters and Producers of Indonesian Handicrafts (ASEPHI) and the International Finance Corporation’s Program for Eastern Indonesia Small and Medium-sized Enterprise Development (IFC PENSA), today held a seminar entitled The Future of Bali Handicraft Industry with the goals of providing market understanding, facing global business challenges and linking entrepreneurs to related agencies.
“To increase the responsiveness of exporters and handicraft producers when facing competitive challenges, we have embarked on a program that focuses on developing knowledge and skills that are enriched with guidance and support by business development service providers,” said Manager for Handicraft Export Promotion Feraldi Loeis. “Such efforts will hopefully provide real changes in their businesses thus Indonesian handicrafts have increased value.”
Warwick Purser, Owner PT Out of Asia, as a speaker said that many Indonesian producers do not have the capacity to conduct market research which impact their export performance. “If too dependent with buyers request, producers may have difficulties in expanding market because they lack understanding on global market characteristics, demands and competitors,” said Purser.
Representatives of PT Prasidha Adhikirya, Surya Pernawa and Susanto, emphasized the importance of having an integrated handicraft industry system that will combine capacities in production, such as human resources, research and development, also bringing the business strategy and production system closer to the market.
Another important issue in anticipating the global market is the will to change. I Gede Bagia Arta, Director of PT Muevo Intersys focuses on change management because often business players tend to be satisfied with their achievement thus do not try to develop themselves. “Nevertheless, by changing on significant issues will provide positive results for the company and industry’s future,” said Bagia Arta.
Participants from the handicraft industry – as producers or supporting institutions – also discussed on issues that support the industry’s structure, such as access to finance, raw material sourcing, transportation and government role.
The Association of Exporters and Producers of Indonesian Handicrafts - ASEPHI is a national business association with membership limited to companies or organizations that have interest or involvement in the handicraft industry.
