Denpasar, October 29, 2004 – Japan International Cooperation Agency, Bali Design Development Organization (DDO) and International Finance Coproration's small medium enterprises facility PENSA holds a “Marketable Design for Japan” seminar for students of the Indonesia Art Institute, designers and specific SMEs to learn practical designs that are acceptable to Japanese market. Subjects for the seminar are on textile design for ladies wear, furniture – particularly chair and desk, and handicraft – especially silver jewelry and Atta products.

The seminar is special because it is transmitted through the JICA-Net System, a distance lecture and seminar system, to allow speakers and experts to provide content without the need to travel. During this seminar, distinctive Japanese experts at the JICA Tokyo office will lecture and provide comments on the samples provided in each subject and provide interaction with the audience.

Participants attending the seminar are expected to learn and understand distinctive features of designs that are favored among Japanese consumers. The seminar also provides insight on critical factors to be avoided in terms of design, as well as giving basic idea to enrich and make Balinese design more attractive to Japanese consumers.

“JICA has been intensively undertaking design promotion and development,” Said Mr. Kurokawa of JICA, “In addition, JICA and Indonesia National Design Center (PDN) under the Small and Medium Enterprises of the Ministry of Trade and Industry (IDKM) initiated the establishment of Design Development Organization (DDO) together with an inter-sectors collaboration in Bali Province.”

JICA also reaches out to IFC-PENSA, a facility for technical assistance to SME’s managed by the International Finance Corporation, to provide reference and guidelines to potential exporters, especially those located in Bali.

“IFC-PENSA’s involvement in the seminar is relevant because the program has targets to improve SME exporters’ business performance and environment,” said IFC-PENSA Access to Business Services Program Manager, Feraldi Loeis, “It is a great at opportunity for JICA, DDO and IFC-PENSA to partner in an effort to promote and develop design for SMEs in a larger scale.”

Design students have learned about design primarily in the Institute from an academic theory standpoint. While this seminar intends to educate them what is marketable design by providing intelligence of real market situation. Designers and SMEs participants are mostly motivated personnel or enterprises that have strong will to improve their design capabilities.
