IFC Advisory Services in Vietnam

Our advisory services in Vietnam works with all levels of government and the private sector to create opportunity for local businesses – especially micro, small, and medium – to grow quickly, innovate, and raise standards. We believe that strong, sustainable growth in Vietnam will come from increasing productive capacities in the business environment, in management and labor, and in strategic sectors.

Our current strategy also prioritizes the need for greater social and environmental awareness. Our ability to bring international expertise to local projects, and our affiliation with the World Bank Group, is helping to bring interested partners and governments together on urgent infrastructure projects and innovations in cleaner and more efficient energy use. By tailoring our activities to meet these challenges and the changing economic conditions, we can help ensure the sustainability of Vietnam’s social, environmental, and economic development.

Our efforts this year have focused on responding to the impact of the recent global financial crisis on Vietnam. We are supporting the country’s financial and real sectors through projects that install good governance, improve managerial capacities, assess exposure to risk, and increase the availability of credit. In doing so, we aim to strengthen Vietnam’s foundation for sustainable private sector development, and to turn short-term challenges into opportunities for growth, jobs, and basic services.

Our core products take into account changing market demand and Vietnam’s development progress. They are:

Improving the investment climate (IC): Recent efforts include simplifying administrative procedures, reducing the cost of tax compliance, advocating for land legislative reform, and promoting structured public-private dialogue by hosting the Vietnam Business Forum. We also continue to meet with government representatives to discuss key areas of business reform.

Increasing private sector access to financial services (ATF): Current projects target a favorable legal and institutional framework for moveable asset financing, improved credit information sharing through a private credit bureau, introduction of international procedures and standards for Vietnam’s capital markets, and the expansion of local bank products, services and outreach.

Improving competitiveness and productivity of firms (Corporate Advice): Projects include expanding business and investment in Vietnam’s bamboo sector, and working to improve the regulatory framework on corporate governance.

Improving environmental and social sustainability in private firms (ESS): Current projects focus on training supervisors to improve labor relations and productivity, and working with commercial banks to develop strategies and EECP financing products. We are also exploring setting up the first formal used lead acid battery recycling plant.

Increasing private sector access to infrastructure (ATI): We are currently exploring the possibility of private sector participation in water supply in small towns.
