Acting EVP Stresses IFC Role in Strengthening Performance of Southern Multinationals

At the IFC-Financial Times Conference on Southern Multinationals in Mumbai last week, Assaad Jabre, acting Executive Vice President for IFC, told conference participants: "A brand that is global – or attempting to be global -- invites far more scrutiny than a domestic company. And more often than not, the first point of attack is on an environmental or social issue."

The program consisted of a panel discussion, two case studies-- Tata Group and Marcopolo-- and presentations by leading players in this field. Over 200 people attended from Brazil, China, Mexico, Turkey, South Africa, and other countries that have discovered these new markets.

The conference was chaired by Quentin Peel, International Affairs Editor, Financial Times. The keynote sessions featured Assaad Jabre, IFC's Acting Executive Vice President; Michael Klein, Vice President, Private Sector Development, World Bank Group; His Excellency P. Chidambaram, Indian Minister of Finance; Kemal Dervis, UNDP Administrator; and His Excellency Luiz Fernando Furlan, Brazil's Minister of Commerce & Industry.
