October 31, 2008—An IFC-Lonmin program that supports South African mining communities was recently awarded top prize in the socio-economic category of the Nedbank Green Mining Awards, which celebrates responsible mining.
IFC and platinum miner Lonmin are fostering sustainable growth in communities surrounding Lonmin's operations in South Africa's North West Province. Through a joint program, the two institutions are supporting local supplier and community development and promoting the increased involvement of women in mining.
The program helped develop 27 local companies, including Little Rock Construction which is fully owned and operated by black women. Also, a health component is implementing HIV/AIDS prevention for miners and their families. So far, more than 50,000 workers and community members have been reached.
