October 5, 2009—The 2009 IFC Client Leadership Award was announced this past weekend at the World Bank Group-IMF Annual Meetings in Istanbul.
This year, the award was given to two recipients—Africa's Ecobank in the financial sector category, and Brazil's Anhanguera Educacional Participações S.A. in the real sector category.
The award honors clients who reflect IFC values and demonstrate leadership, innovation, operational excellence, strong corporate governance, and a commitment to socially and environmentally sustainable development. Both Anhanguera and Ecobank were selected for driving impact where it is needed most.
About Anhanguera
Anhanguera Educacional Participações S.A., Brazil's leading private post-secondary educational institution, educated more than 750,000 working adults in 2008. Its innovative business model focuses on low- and middle-income working adults who may not have access to public universities. On average, graduates have almost tripled their income after completing their studies.
About Ecobank
Ecobank has operations in 27 countries Africa and a network of 600 branches, providing much needed financial services. Its priority is access to finance, and it has a strong focus on small and medium enterprises, microfinance, gender, and housing finance. The company was innovative in introducing local-currency credit cards.
