Development Marketplace, supported by IFC, the Global Environment Facility, and other partners, have announced the 22 winners of the 2008 global competition. The competition awarded more than $4 million in seed money to projects in 16 countries.
There were eight winners from Latin America and the Caribbean, six from East Asia and Pacific, five from Sub-Saharan Africa, and three from South Asia. Winning entries received up to $200,000.
This year's theme was Sustainable Agriculture for Development. The winning ideas include:
- Milk coolers that adapt beer-cooling technology for use by Ugandan farmers
- Rice fields that serve as fertilizer for cost-effective and environmentally sustainable farming in Ecuador
- Leasing mechanisms for unused dry riverbeds that permit migrants and displaced persons to cultivate fresh produce in Nepal
