Donors

The Advisory Services Progam for Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC Program) has established working partnerships with donor institutions from countries such as Switzerland, Canada, the Netherlands, the United States of the America and the United Kingdom. Also, the LAC Program has received contributions from the IFC TA Trust Funds Program and the IFC Capacity Building Facility. Their contribution and support has allowed the LAC Program to produce a real impact in the private sector development in the region.

The LAC Program plans to continue working with these partners and programs, and aims at developing other partnerships to expand and deepen its developmental impact.

The partner institutions and programs include:

Swiss Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO)
As one of IFC’s key donors, Switzerland has provided funding for cutting-edge programs around the world. One of SECO’s goals is to support strong and sustainable growth in the developing countries and economies in transition. Based on this mandate, SECO supports initiatives that build a climate conducive to private initiative, and promote the development of SMEs.

In Latin America, the partnership agreement between SECO and the LAC Program provided resources to implement a series of projects under the direction of the Business Enabling Environment (BEE) business line. The BEE business line has applied these funds to implement municipal simplification projects in Bolivia, Honduras, Nicaragua and Peru. Also the Municipal Scorecard study is implementing in ten countries of the region. Additionally, and under the Access to Finance (A2F) business line coordination, SECO's contribution supported an assessment of the legal barriers for financial leasing in Nicaragua and Bolivia.

Netherlands–IFC Partnership Program (NIPP)
The Netherlands is the second-largest donor to the IFC Technical Assistance Trust Fund Program (TATF). In 2001, the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Economic Affairs set-up partnership programs to bring all of IFC’s technical assistance programs under an umbrella agreement, with streamlined structures and procedures.

In Latin America, the Netherlands has contributed to support the LAC Program’s work in Bolivia, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Under the Sustainable Value Chains (SVC) business line direction, NIPP’s funds have allowed indigenous artisans and enterprises to improve and expand their businesses. In Nicaragua, NIPP contribution has allowed to create a replicable model to support sustainable wood supply chain, increase their access to and competitiveness in international markets and meet global environmental requirements. In Bolivia, the LAC Program allocated NIPP funds to make a profound impact in the business of indigenous communities, by helping them meet increasing market demand for their products and facilitating the establishment of long-term commercial relations with international buyers. Additionally, and building-up on SECO’s contribution to the LAC Program’s BEE business line, NIPP’s funds contributed to implement business simplification projects in three municipalities in Honduras and housing projects in Nicaragua and Honduras.

Canadian International Agency for Development (CIDA)
CIDA supports sustainable development in developing countries in order to reduce poverty and to contribute to a more secure, equitable and prosperous world. Aligned with the LAC Program’s work, one of CIDA’s main priorities is to promote sustained and equitable economic growth by supporting private sector development in developing countries.

To meet this objective in Latin America, CIDA’s contribution to the LAC Program was allocated to develop three mapping studies: two on microfinance, and one on leasing. The microfinance maps targeted Honduras and Peru and assessed the financial services needs of micro and small entrepreneurs in both countries. The LAC Program, under the direction of its A2F business line is drawing on these studies to develop larger and more comprehensive projects in both countries. Also, CIDA’s contribution to the LAC Program was instrumental to conduct mapping studies on supply chain best practices in Peru, and Colombia. Similarly, the LAC Program, through its Enhancing Local Benefits (ELB) business line will apply these studies to implement large scale supplier/distributor chain development programs with local SME’s in both countries. In Bolivia, CIDA’s contribution is improving the competitiveness of companies in wood sector.

Department for International Development of the Government of the United Kingdom (DFID)
The Department for International Development (DFID) is the part of the UK Government that manages Britain's aid to poor countries and works to eradicate extreme poverty. DFID works in social sectors such as SME, health, education, and environment. This contribution was allocated to finance Sao Paulo’s municipality business procedure simplification. Also, DFID is contributing to the Municipal Scorecard Study 2008 in Central America, Ecuador and Colombia.
