Strategy

IFC focuses on key development challenges facing Latin America and the Caribbean. We have developed an integrated approach of investment and advisory services targeting the following strategic priorities:

  • Improving the business environment
  • Supporting projects that reach under-served people at the base of the economic pyramid (BOP)
  • Increasing our focus on smaller countries, especially in the Caribbean and Central America
  • Promoting investments in clean technology to mitigate climate change
  • Supporting private sector participation in infrastructure
  • Increasing access to finance, with an emphasis on micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs)
IFC is a long-term partner that promotes sustainability by strengthening social, environmental, and corporate governance standards. In the Caribbean and Central America, which have some of the highest levels of income inequality, IFC is helping businesses and communities strengthen their comparative advantages. In middle-income countries, such as Brazil, Colombia, and Mexico, we promote access to education, telecommunications, renewable energy, and financial services to under-served segments, with special attention to people at the base of the economic pyramid (BOP).

To address the impact of the global financial crisis in the region, IFC developed a series of crisis response initiatives, in collaboration with other development agencies and partners. For more information, visit Financial Crisis: IFC's Response.
