IFC currently holds a portfolio of $2.3 billion in investments worldwide in power generation, distribution, transmission, and energy efficiency projects. IFC also has a number of investments in power investment funds. We can look at greenfield projects, corporate loans, acquisition finance and refinancings.


Recent Projects


Macaé - Thermal Power Project in Brazil
IFC provided financing of $75 million and syndicated $50 million to construct a 895 MW gas-fired plant in Rio de Janeiro state. Macaé provides a significant source of generation to one of the regions most heavily impacted by Brazil’s 2001 energy crisis. Sponsored by El Paso Corporation, the project was named by Platts Power magazine top 12 plants of 2003.


El Canadá- Renewable Energy Project in Guatemala
IFC provided financing of $15 million and syndicated $12 million to construct El Canadá, a 46 MW hydroelectric plant in Western Guatemala. IFC also worked with the World Bank managed Prototype Carbon Credit Fund to raise carbon credit financing, which provides the project with approximately $500 thousand annually in additional revenue. The El Canadá project is one of the few new hydroelectric projects built in Guatemala over the past 12 years.
Powerlinks Transmission -Transmission Project in India
IFC provided financing of $75 million in Powerlinks Transmission Ltd. to help fund the company’s investments in transmission lines in India. Powerlinks will build 1,200 km of transmission lines from the eastern region of India to New Delhi, with a capacity of about 3,000 MW.
Suez and Port Said East Power – Thermal Projects in Egypt
IFC provided a $90 million loan and syndicated a $305 million loan to finance the Suez Gulf and Port Said power projects. Sponsored by Electricite de France Internationals each project consists of a 682.5 MW gas-fired plant. Together the projects represent by far the largest private power investments in Egypt to date.
