An evaluation of the World Bank Group's activities in extractive industries was completed by the following World Bank Group evaluation units: Independent Evaluation Group (IEG) for the World Bank; Independent Evaluation Group (IEG) for IFC; and Independent Evaluation Group (IEG) for MIGA.

The final report, released in mid-2005, is part of a series of activities—including the Extractive Industries Review, an independent consultation led by Emil Salim, a former Indonesian Minister for Environment, and a special study by the Office of the Compliance Advisor/Ombudsman for IFC and MIGA—to assess the future role of the World Bank Group in oil, gas, and mining.
