What will prevent medical professionals in public sector hospitals from leaving for better-paying jobs in the private sector?
- The report found that many medical professionals are already working in both the public and private sectors. Hence strengthening private sector health will help the entire industry.
- The real “brain drain” is from Africa to countries in other regions. A vibrant private sector, with higher-paying jobs and a better working environment, may help keep health care workers employed in their own countries. Good quality private facilities may also encourage the return of some of the African doctors and nurses who are working overseas today.
- Hygeia Nigeria, an IFC health care client, is a good example. IFC is helping finance the upgrade of Hygeia’s hospitals, including better IT infrastructure for its health maintenance organization. Hygeia’s modern and efficient facilities are attracting overseas-based Nigerian doctors, nurses, and managers to return to their country. In fact, the company’s CEO was educated in the United States but went back to Nigeria to work in health care.
