IFC's Global Financial Markets department currently holds a committed portfolio of $9.4 billion across seven developing regions and 14 sub-sectors.

In a mix of transitional markets within the Central and Eastern European region, IFC focuses on countries, financial sectors, and projects with high social and environmental development impact.

In East Asia and Pacific, IFC has diversified transactions in asset management, investment banks, mortgage origination and servicing, distressed debt, insurance, and trade finance.

Latin America is the largest portfolio region of IFC's global financial Markets activity. Across the region in poorer and less developed areas, IFC's focus is on expanding financing to key economic sectors.

Despite a complex political and economic climate in the Middle East and North Africa, IFC aims to increase financial investments in this diverse region with emphasis on high impact sectors such as housing finance and small businesses.

As a region with fast growing investment opportunities, IFC's role in the development of South Asia's local financial markets includes institution building and direct investment in commercial banks, private savings institutions, housing finance companies, and microfinance institutions.

IFC is investing aggressively in the Southern Europe and Central Asia region. Pre-privatization and institution-building projects are a key focus as a number of the countries in the region move towards EU accession.

In Sub-Saharan Africa, IFC focuses on debt, Tier II, equity and quasi-equity investments in financial institutions. Efforts are also aimed at increased funding for sustainable development projects in microfinance and at encouraging investment from one developing nation into another.
